In Ethan Frome, the setting of Starkfield greatly contributed to the story with the endless cold and winter. This led to isolation for Ethan and Zeena on the farm, as they drew within themselves and talked less and less even to eachother over the years. The silence eventually led to Zeena's growing 'illness,' the lack of company actually making her sick. Of course, Ethan did not help with his oblivious attitude towards all of her problems, he was only focused on the "princess" of the story, Mattie Silver. Mattie is not the perfect princess envisioned when thinking of a fairy tale, she manipulates Ethan from the beginning of the novel. She conveniently stays distant from him until she finds out that her position with Zeena is not as secure as she had hoped, so she triggers Ethan's protective instincts by playing the innocent, sweet maiden who needs a big strong man to protect her. Mattie plays the part well in Ethan's eyes, but it is easy to see that she cares more about not leaving the safety of the farm then not leaving him. When she ends up forced to leave, she would rather she and Ethan both die than leaving and letting him leave, so she rashly suggest suicide. Some princess she turned out to be.
